Poems in The Lord of the Rings/ Poemas en El Señor de los Anillos

[English and Spanish versions]

Here is my slideshow commentary on the poems in The Lord of the Rings.   I delivered this talk at the 2015 Spanish Tolkien Society convention in Alicante (Spain).

J.R.R.Tolkien inserted more than 60 poems, with a great variety of metres and contents, which are perfectly integrated in the narrative through the different characters and situations of The Lord of the Rings.

My study can be divided into four parts: 

        1) some words about the general characteristic of the poems. 

        2) a brief introduction on English metrics and the most common types of verses used by Tolkien in the novel, verses following the English metrical forms or metres of his own invention.

         3) an analysis of the relationship between metrics-content-characters and situations.

         4) commentary of some poems.

 Y a continuación la versión original en español de la presentación de mi charla sobre los poemas en The Lord of the Rings.  Presenté la conferencia en Alicante, octubre 2015, en la convención anual de la STE (Sociedad Tolkien Española).

J.R.R.Tolkien insertó en The Lord of the Rings más de 60 poemas, de metros y contenidos variados, que se integran perfectamente en la narración a través de las distintas situaciones y personajes.

He dividido mi estudio en cuatro partes: 

       1) características generales de los poemas. 

       2) breve introducción sobre el sistema métrico usado en inglés y sobre los tipos de versos y estrofas utilizados por Tolkien.

        3) análisis de la relación entre metro-contenido-personajes y situaciones.

        4) comentario de algunos poemas.

    A continuación mi charla sobre la traducción en prosa del poema épico Beowulf realizada por J.R.R. Tolkien en 1926 y publicada en mayo del 2014 por su hijo Christopher Tolkien.

 

   The following is the slideshow presentation of my talk on the 1926 prose translation of the epic poem Beowulf  by J.R.R.Tolkien. This prose translation was published for the first time in 2014 by his son Christopher Tolkien.

   Mi estudio se divide en tres partes: una introducción sobre el poema Beowulf y su época; análisis de las traducciones que sobre este poema se han hecho hasta hoy; y, en tercer lugar, análisis y estudio de la traducción hecha por Tolkien.

  My study can be divided into three parts: an introduction about the poem Beowulf; a study and analysis of the translations of the poem made before and after 1926; and, especially, the study and analysis of the translation made by J.R.R.Tolkien. 

La conferencia se presentó en la convención anual de la STE (Sociedad Tolkien Española)  en Zaragoza, diciembre de 2014.
